World class riesling is such a bargain

The header says it all. Riesling is arguably the best f”#%&€! grape in the world. And probably also the best bargain among quality wines there is (except for sherry).

Take this wonderful Rheinhessen Riesling Trocken from Wagner Stempel. Siefersheimer Riesling vom Porphyr 2008 costs only €16 (in Sweden) and it is textbook Rhein – riesling. Compare that price to a Bordeaux or Burgundy of equal or lesser quality and it’s almost ridiculously cheap!

The wines from Rheinhessen can be a bit fatter and more fullbodied and with more tropical fruitpower than their counterparts from Rheingau or Mosel. But this wine just blows your mind with clean, fresh and palate cleansing fruit and mineral purity.

The grapes comes from grand cru vineyards in Höllberg and Heerkretz!

Light golden yellow colour.

On the nose textbook aromas of lime/citrus, minerals, petrol and a hint of peach.

The taste is focused and wonderfully refreshing. A bit of spritz and a mixture of lime, petroleum, smoky/chalky minerals, peach and you get just a hint of honey (a hint that will develop and grow stronger with bottle age). Still young. If you can resist it – bury a bottle or two in the cellar (or winecooler) for up to 10 years!
